They aren't great. Never have been, probably never will be. You see any Japanese car driving down the road, ask someone what it was...The answer you get will be..."I Dunno". Have an old American car drive down the same street, and 3/4 of the people will recognize it. "Hey, look at that old Shoebox Chevy!" or "Oooo, a 1969 Charger!" They are recognizable, the Imports are forgettable. If imports are so great why is it you never hear people talk about vintage ones like we do about 57 chevys?
Mainly because you aren't listening.
I saw an immaculately turned out Ford Cortina GT500 in San Diego last week. Someone had put a lot of effort into redoing the leather seats, all of the chrome and brightwork, and finding replacements for the tail lights.
It makes you wonder, if Ford had introduced the car in America in 1964 and put it under the Falcon in their model lineup, whether or not people would have had this ridiculous prejudice a) against small cars and b) against British ones.If imports are so great why is it you never hear people talk about vintage ones like we do about 57 chevys?
There are some Japanese import cars were rubbish until the 80's. You will see Datsun 280Z or Mazda RX 7 from that time period. There are people who keep around older Mercedes and BMW's. Old Beetles are all over. You do realize that in the 50's and 60's there were much fewer imported cars in the American market so the imports were much rarer from that time period.
Old Mercs and Beemers are talked about more often than Japanese cars, mainly because old Japanese cars were trash. The old German cars are VERY expensive, as anything classic will be, but finding one is much harder because, after all, a majority stayed in the country where they were made. But an old American classic just has some magic to it you just can't understand until you've driven oneIf imports are so great why is it you never hear people talk about vintage ones like we do about 57 chevys?
Actually, they do.
Old mercedes, BMW's, even volkswagon.
You just don't talk to people who have the $$$ to actually OWN one of them.
Because 53 years ago imports were crap, also the American Muscle Car will never be outdone by a vintage Honda or Toyota. If imports are so great why is it you never hear people talk about vintage ones like we do about 57 chevys?
because most of the great imports were in their country in 57 America got few of japans and Germany designs then
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
