Are used Civics and Corollas overpriced?

I'm looking for a pre-owned Civic or Corolla in the $6-7k range, but I'm having trouble finding anything with less than 130k miles. I'm in Florida and cars here tend to last a while, but every car I've ever owned (2 Chevys and a Ford) started to fall apart after 100k miles. Therefore, I'm a little wary of buying a 7-10 year old car with that kind of mileage.

What's the average lifespan of a 7-10 year old Civic or Corolla assuming it was properly maintained? Are used Civics and Corollas overpriced?
The mileage isnt the main thing to be wary about, it's the condition.

There can be junkers @ 30k, and cars still going strong @ 230k.

As for overpriced, compared to what standard?

Any car has the potential of living 30-40 yrs no problem %26amp; then some. But it's all about how well the car was maintained %26amp; if the dong dong owner knew what they were doing half the time. Reliable cars tend to command a decent price tag. Look at Mazda Protege' (02-04) %26amp; Mazda 3 (05 and up). They are comparatively priced as well. Now don't ignore some domestic models. The Ford Focus for years has been a recommended used car according to Consumer Reports. The 08 Chevy Malibu through present is also a good used car. But before that they were not so good. The 05 through present Buick Lacrosse is another recommended used car %26amp; so is the Cadillac CTS. Any car will fall apart if you don't address it's problems irregardless of who makes it. There are plenty of cars (Fords n' Chevy's) here where I live that people claim they have 100K+ miles on them. They also have money to keep them running too. My bro has 200K on a 98 Regal GS. He's also a mechanic too. I used to have (thanx to the fuel crisis a few yrs ago) an old Dodge truck with the Cummins diesel %26amp; I swear I could not break that thing no matter what I did. So it's all about what you buy %26amp; how well it's taken care of. Cheers! Are used Civics and Corollas overpriced?
100k is nothing on a HOnda or Toyota but a death sentence on American cars. That's the reason Corollas and Civics are overpriced. They are in high demand. Are used Civics and Corollas overpriced?
Yes, they are overpriced because they are good cars and there is good demand for them.

However, I think you can get far more for your money with an american car.

Sure, it might not last as long and might not be as reliable but you will save thousands.

True story. About 5 years ago, i decided to get out of the car business. For years, I never had my "own" car, just drove one I was selling.

So i went to a little wholesale auction run by a mega new car dealer who has about 6-7 different dealerships.

I wanted a cheap car because I know how much cars depreciate and I don't want to incur substantial depreciation.

2 cars caught my eye that day. A 94 Honda Accord that was really nice. Had 150k but was in immaculate shape and ran %26amp; drove great.

I knew it was going to be expensive but you never know so I figured I would bid $22-2300 at the most.

It sold for $3550 plus a buyers fee. The buyer probably paid $3700 in total.

The other car I liked was a 94 Buick Century. It only had 65,000 miles and the AC, while working, was not getting as cold as it should. It was clearly owned by a little old lady. She parked it under a carport but otherwise it wasn't as "nice" as the honda. But it had 85,000 less miles.

Oh, it had a small crack in the bottom of the windshield and one of the headlight covers was cracked.

I ended up buying the buick for $1750 plus a $75 buyers fee. $1825 total.

Ive been driving it for the last 5 years. Needed front brakes, an alternator (Used from pull-a-part), a break switch light went out and I had freon added to the AC.
And I think I replaced 2 tires.

Its never left me stranded. Although I "caught" the alternator going out and got home, charged the battery and had it replaced the next day.

Now, Im not going to tell you that a buick is as good as a honda. Its not.

But I got a car with less than half the miles for less than half the price.

And I have no reason to think my Buick wont be going strong several years from now. I intend on keeping it. Its probably about time for a battery since the prior owner replaced it a few months prior to me getting it.

And, despite popular opinion, my buick gets almost as good MPG as the honda.

Mine is 19 %26amp; 29. The honda might be 21 %26amp;31.

There used to be a book called "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds ".

In my opinion, after 15+ years in the car business, the prices people are willing to pay for old Honda %26amp; toyotas are just crazy. (The madness of crowds)

Sure, they ARE good cars. They are just not good "VALUES" for the most part.

Look at other brands and you can get a lot more car for your money. Set aside the thousands you save and you can pay for any repair it might need.

Mazda is almost as good without the crazy prices. Most GMs, especially with the 3800 engines are good cars. Ford Escorts are good cars.

(Oh, my Buick is a 6 cyl, while the make them with 4 cly, you dont want one with a 4)
yes, they are, look at nissan sentra it is the overlooked really reliable gas saver i got an 06 with 85k miles on it for 5k in texas i am sure you can find a newer sentra for your price and be better off with it then a corolla or civic. civics are way over priced people think honda holds value alot more then other cars, and it is true they are known to hold value well but not what some people are asking like i saw a 94 civic with almost 200k miles on it for 4k way too much for a car that old with that many miles nissan is my pick i had a nissan sentra with 270k miles on it when i sold it to my neighbor who still drives it with almost 350k miles on it and i had a nissan pathfinder that i put 35k miles on it in 3 years no major issues and i now have 92k miles on that sentra i have now and doing just routine maintance
