Honda and Toyota build great cars. The American cars have since 2000 pretty well caught up to the Japanese cars in overall reliability.



However, the American cars have always had longer lasting drive trains. And it is the drive train that gets you home.





On the othe rhands, American cars until recently have had more problems with the non essential stuff. However, I would stack up my 2004 Focus and 2005 Cavalier up against anything from japan of the same model year for overall build quality.



But I would not do that for a 1995 model.
No, Honda and Toyota get better gas mileage and last much longer than American cars. You get more money for a trade in and they are excellent for resale because they keep their value high. I bought a new 2007 Chevy pickup truck and it had 14 flat tires in one year. the word "superior" or "built to last" is advertisement junks.
They will last, but will break down more often, costing more.

Honda and Toyota will last with far fewer break downs, less cost.

Most products last if well cared for, reliablity edge goes to Japanese
