I am a mechanic so i understand that there are going to be a variety of challenges like replacing the exhaust and engine mounts etc. could someone please give me a rough breakdown of the parts involved with this swap. also, its an automatic, will the factory trans hold up to a stock powered L98. please, no bs opinions about camaros or chevys, just looking for an honest educated answer.I am looking at doing a v6 to v8 engine swap in a 1990 camaro for a coworker.?
Juan, you do not HAVE to replace all the things you mentioned for the swap
Like the posi rear end.. That is an upgrade option, if still 7.625" 10 bolt then its still just as weak with or with out posi.
Now to the asker..
You can't use the v6 transmission. It won't bolt up. You will need a 700r4 from a v8 car, or you can use a long tail shaft TH-350 and it will work with stock driveshaft, but you will need a torque arm mount for the th-350 made by hurst or B%26amp;M
The springs can stay. The v8 on v6 springs in front will lower car 1/4 to 1/2" Not really a big deal
You will need the v8 engine and if your staying with EFI then you will need the engine bay wiring harness for a v8 car and the computer
You will need the v8 engine mounts (new at parts store for $10-12 each)
You'll need all the acc. mounting brckets and what not with the v8 engine.
The rad. may have to be changed
The hoses will need to be changed.
As you know you wil need v8 exhaust manifolds or headers and a v8 Y pipeI am looking at doing a v6 to v8 engine swap in a 1990 camaro for a coworker.?

This will be your best resource...TONS of info on all kinds of swaps(including a L98 swap). It's not that bad, pretty straightforward.
Good luck!
EDIT: Total disregard the post by Powered Donut, he's not even close...the '90 Camaro didn't come with a 3.8 and apparently doesn't use a transmission lolI am looking at doing a v6 to v8 engine swap in a 1990 camaro for a coworker.?
You'll have to use transmission for L 98:
Plus you will have to re-spring the front end going to heavier springs to accommodate the heavier V8:
I ran into that same problem and ended up going with a turbo 400 transmission. Also had to change the drive shaft and rear end to a posi-traction rear end as well:I am looking at doing a v6 to v8 engine swap in a 1990 camaro for a coworker.?
You'll need a new trans and mounts/crossmembers. assuming the V6 is layed out for rear wheel drive. if the 3.8 V6 is used in the Camaro the same as it is in the Monte Carlos, it's a transversal mount (sideways in the engine compartment) for FWD. if this is the case, just get a new car. FWD don't use transmissions either, and i don't think the bolts on the Trq Converter on the transaxle will fit the flywheel on the 350
