I am trying to find restoration catalogs for Jeep Wagoneers and so far I havent found anything. I want something like LMC truck offers for restorers of chevys and whatnot, but there doesnt seem to be any out there. Also any good websites to visit for parts would be appreciated as well.

if you add up the cars that are no longer in production to the cars that are in production, i'd say there are about 5,000 to 10,000 different cars out there. of course, that includes each and every model made. asking someone to list every type of car out there is really too much. cars have been around since 1893. so there are too many to count and no one has that much free time on their hands, and if they do then i feel sorry. im not tryin to say this question is dumb, im just sayin its a lot to ask. and for everyone out there, henry ford did not invent the first car, mercedes benz did. in 1893HOW MANY TYPES OF CARS ARE THERE?
henry ford is credited for making the first production vehicle. mercedes benz had the idea way before ford did, but ford was the first to put it into action. mercedes had created a sort of prototype, which had three wheels and a small 1 cylinder engine. there are only a hand full in the world.

Chevy and Ford are vehicle companies or manufacturers. They are not "types" of cars. A type of car would be a sedan, coupe, convertible, etc.



If you want to know how many manufacturers there are, you need to be more specific. There have been hundreds of them over the years. Some lasted only for a brief period, others lasted a long time but no longer exist. Are you asking about current manufacturers or since the invention of the automobile (or before/after another historical milestone, such as one of the World Wars)? Also, are you asking about a worldwide count or only North American manufacturers ( since you mentioned Ford and Chevy specifically)?HOW MANY TYPES OF CARS ARE THERE?
go on to auto trader.com or autotrader.ca and then search for a car. there is a drop down list of all the makes they have. there are TONS. i dunno if they have all of them, but they do have alot of them.



Those arn't types of cars though, types would be sports car, coupe, sedan, luxury sedan ect... your asking about how many MAKES there are. (just so you know)

Why do people like chevy?

I'm 18 and am in college, well.. Ive been working at a garage for extra credit. And it seems to me as theres WAY more chevys in the shop then ford. Of course im a Ford Fan, But every chevy we see has a engine knock problem. So pretty much my question is why do people hate on fords, more then people that hate on chevy.Why do people like chevy?
Chevy's are designed better and GM also doesn't worry about it's cars looks they just worry about the quality which is the best any car maker would want to have. And they tend to make it way past 200,000 miles with out blowing up,but some ford can make it that far. But what it really is about is what you like, like you like good looking cars with a powerful engine but it's really a death trap. Dodge fans have really no interest in nice cars the only nice truck Chrysler has made in dodge's range was the cummins series trucks. Chevy fans are looking for quality not looks and the most powerful engines on the market and the longest lasting.



If you want to know more or yell at me for saying something that you didn't like because you think your car is better, send me a message telling what you think is wright and y you think what i said wasn'tWhy do people like chevy?
Heres the answer........Every engine is a great engine if it is treated properly and well maintained. That is, don't be lazy and get the oil AND filter changed EVERY 3000-4000 miles no matter what the manual tells you.



Another reason why you see so many chevys in the garage is because there are more chevys on the road than fords, so that means more of them are going to need maintained and maintenanced
Chevy's are designed better not just appearance wise but in everything. plus if your gonna hot rod something chevy parts are way more readily available and cheaper. I've had both chevy's and fords and If I have a choice I'm never buying another ford again...... unfortunately sometimes it's more about what you can afford and what's available than what you want.Why do people like chevy?

Most of the parts are interchangeable between any small block chevy.



A 350 is the easiest and the cheapest engine to build up with a very large selection of aftermarket parts. And they are almost indestructible with minimal maintenance
Chevys are built with great quality and looks and runs great. Chevy has proven time and time again that they are the best vehicles on the road and on the drag strip. The Hemi use to be the fastest drag race car until the 428 camaro came out and once again chevy took over as the king of racing.Why do people like chevy?
Everybody has their preference..... some like Chevy, some Ford, some Dodge..... where I live now I see more Chrysler/Dodge on the road..... it's all just a matter of preference, they are all about the same in quality, with the exception of a model or 2 that tends to be a lemon.....
Chevy is smoother ride i have 99 s10 blazer and it smoother than a explore and get better mpg then ford. also fords all drive like trucks. Chevy is easier to fix Chevy is much easier to drive

interchangeable parts, better design, better look. by the way have you been to a dirt track in a while? everyone there runs monte carlos and camaros.

fist off it depends on the model I stand by V8 chevy trucks as No.1, because in the late 80's early 90's Fords were so bad I could get them past 80K without dumping tons of money into them and the Chevy trucks didn't do that to me.Also every time you went to repair them you needed special freakin tools. If you are a mechanic than one day you too will say TOYOTA! Ford may have changed since the new line-up came out but I have been burned way too bad by them to go back.

Even though I had 70's model Ford trucks that were fantastic.



On the other hand any 6 cylinder car Chevy has is a pile of you Know what. not worth anyting.I would sell it Japan for scrap right off the assembly line.



I recently test drove a Cadillac and was completely amazed of how low level quality garbage that thing was. I would take a smooth riding towncar over that any day.



In my opinion from owning a construction company with over 40 vehicles.



Chevy trucks are better than Ford and Dodge



Only buy Japanese cars



As for luxury car I would take a BMW or Audi because of the performance and craftmanship. Even though i would be under the hood more.

You know how it is. If you hate the car your wrenching on the job pisses you off. But if you like the car than it just routine service :)

And as messed up as it is "the people" who have the money you are tring to earn (steal) will look at you different. Just don't drive it to your friend's kegger - take the pick-up.

You can't base chevy's rep on the new FWD crap you are seeing come into the shop



And you can't really base chevy's reliability on what your seeing in the shop. Remember it's in the shop cause the person cant work on it thereself



I mean no disrespect to anyone but really it seems like in the past 20 years most people has got even more so dumb about car care.



I see it alot myself in my auto repair, performance shop.. 20,000 miles between oil changes just don't cut it. Be it chevy, ford, mopar, toyota, etc



10 year old air filters, spark plugs thats been in so long the wrench hex has solid rusted



Now the main reason chevy has the big following is from their V8's of the 50's, 60's, and 70's



285 HP 283,s 350 HP 327's, 375 HP 350's. Mech fuel injection in the late 50's, dual quad and 3 deuce setups



Not to mention parts interchange. No other bar make can interchange parts like a small block chevy can.



I can put on 2000 350 vortec heads onto a 1962 327 with out modding anything (just use a vortec style intake)



Water pumps, fuel pumps, intakes, oil pans, timing covers, rods, cams, lifters, pushrods, heads, transmissions will all interchange between all 40+ years of the genI small block regradless of engine size, 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400



And heck same goes for all the chevy big blocks other than the W engines like the 348 and 409 big block



Fords and mopars you just cant do that with



Then you look into parts.. Being all years are interchangle used parts are everywhere and a dime a dozen..



Look at new parts and ford parts are 1.5 to 2.25 times higher than same chevy part



Mopar parts are 3 times and more higher

Should i build my 302 block?

I was wondering if i should build my 302 engine that i dropped into my 68 f100. I want something fast well just enough to beat any asshole with their chevys with flow's and a cold air intake. So they can shut the **** up about bragging how "fast" their trucks are and so i wont be scared to race you know?Should i build my 302 block?

Don't mind the Mexican Peetro he's on his way back to o'le Mexico anyday now. He don't like Fords since he had to ride in a Bronco run by border control agencies.
Why are you having trouble out running a GovernMent owned junker with a 302, even in stock form?
Hell I was killing them with a 300 inline 6 and 3 spd on the column shift back in the day stock for stock against the 305 and 350 lead block gas guzzlers.
The 302 is one of the easiest builds there is and is highly modifiable.
Trick 1, get rid of the factory heads.
2 get a nice stroker kit of 331 CID preferably from Scat racing engine kits or DSS racing, no need in anihlating a Chevy with a overkill 347 stroker.
A main stud girdle and the AFR 185 heads.
If it's not a newer HO block run a small base circle roller cam. You can have the block drilled and tapped for the spider arms for the roller lifters, or do it yourself (simple proceedure). Do it while notching your block for crank clearance. Another easy proceedure.
Victor Jr intake for mid to top end or Eldelbrock dual plane for low to mid end 1/8-1/4-1/2 mile runs.
Good brand 600 CFM carb and you'll be good to kill in the engine department.
Change that rear end to a 9 inch with 3.73's or 4.10-4.11 gearing with positive traction.
You didn't mention the tranny?Should i build my 302 block?
13B is right and funny as heck too! You will not have to change mounts if you go with any later 302. I have a mild 302HO with a 4 barrel in my little Ranger and it kicks butt.Should i build my 302 block?

I have not told any one this on answers , but my favorite driver used to be dale jarrett, until I met him at bristol 5 years ago. me and 13 of my friends stayed in an rv[I slept on the floor in the kitchenette] My back was killing me the next day. I walked down to D.J.'s trailer and waited for him to come by after qualifying. I had on a dale jarrett shirt, hat, And I had a sign that my girlfriend had made me that morning. I had been waiting for about 2 hours, and it was about 85 degrees, and he walk's by me. He walk's by me and I ask him to sign my hat. He told me to Fu-- off kid. I threw my hat down, and ripped my shirt off, and threw my sign down and stomped on them, and told him to go to he--. Later that day jeff gordon, who was my girlfriend's favorite driver{ I used to kid her and say that he was gay] Walked by us, and she had on his hat and shirt. She never said a word to him and he walked over to us , and shook her hand and mine, and a couple of my friend's hand's, and started signing everything that we had, and was very nice to all of us. That is the day that I quit being a Gordon hater, and started to pull for him. he hung around my friends and I , for about 20 minutes and my girlfriend was beaming for the rest of the weekend, and I had to hear I told you so for the rest of the weekend, and a lot longer. Bottom line, jeff gordon is a nice guy, and that is why I defend gordon now so vigourously.

When I went to by my first car from a dealer, I was in the Military. Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, GM and all "American" made dealers would not work with me. I went to Toyota and when I told them I was in the Military they had a special deal for Military. I will never, ever, ever, ever will forget how I was treated by "American" dealerships. (FYI, I grew up in Michigan). I felt like crap before going to Toyota. Let me also say, I did my research and I was given an unbelievable deal to buy Toyota. They treated me with respect and honor. I am still in disbelief at how I was treated by "American" companies. My relatives who work for the car plants don't like me, but why give them my money if they don't respect me in the military????

I just go my 87 chevy caprice lifted up and i was wondering....?

when the shop got done i looked at it yes its higher but the front doesnt seem even with the rear like its an inch off? the guy said its because the rear skirts are bigger and make the back look higher but i saw chevys like mine raised up and there even so i dunno if thats true and he said thats the highest he could get it for the price! he added new shocks and bigger springs what do u guys think?I just go my 87 chevy caprice lifted up and i was wondering....?
alot of the new springs will take time to settle in, but also he may have put the wrong springs in. im guessing you didnt have new front springs installed? if not then the car is at its original height in the back and youll have to replace the fronts to even it out. need more infoI just go my 87 chevy caprice lifted up and i was wondering....?

Pretty much its gear ratios and just a small difference in size. Sorta like the dana 44 or dana 60 differentials. Best thing is to talk with a gm mechanic at a chevy dealer they can be more helpful with that question they work on them a lot

Starter Problems or Cylinoide?

Ok my girl has a 2000 chevy cavailer that makes a grinding noise when it turns, when you try to start it. I checked the wires and they seem to not be loose? any one know enough about chevys to dtermine how to tell if it is the starter going out or if it could be the cylinoide? You didn't specify whether or not the grinding noise is still present when the car is running. All the solonoid does is engage the starter motor into the bendix whcih engages the flywheel, if it's grinding, my assumption that it is the starter itself.Starter Problems or Cylinoide?

Since I own a Durango, I'll say Dodge. The only other Dodge I owned was a 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T with a 440 magnum, otherwise I owned 6 or 7 Plymouths, including a 1970 Roadrunner that I built to cruise all day long in the triple digits and top out at over 160 m.p.h. (easily). MoPar rules baby! I also owned a 1969 Firebird and a 1971 Chevelle, and a couple other Chevys. But when it comes to street racing, nothing rules the street like a MoPar
mine is ford, which is funny cause I don't like any of the ford drivers, go figure.

I HAVE A 99 LUMINA WITH 130,000 MI ON IT... THE RADIATOR FLUID KEEPS NEEDING TO BE REFILLED. IS THIS COMMON AMONG CHEVYS AND WHAT COULD BE POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND APPROXIMATE REPAIR COST?MY RADIATOR FLUID KEEPS DROPPING?
possible you have a leak either in the radiator or the water pump. also you could have leak in the intake manifold or head gasket. Can have radiator and water pump pressure tested to see if that is the problem. Just have to look and do some tests. could be a simple fix if you are lucky. first thing to do is pressure test cooling system not forgetting the heater matrix test from cold to hot if ok might be the start of a head gasket also check the seal on rad cap
you could have the heater core leaking on the floor, a head gasket leaking, the reservoir leaking or the radiator. maybe a hose.

Mate you have to go turbo,

it runs of your exhaust gases so when you are not on boost you are actually saving gas, ask anyone. If you decide to start doing up your car later on you will not regret a turbo version, also with a boost controller you can up the boost real easy (depending on fuel cut.. so on), only downfall is turbos take a bit of time to spool up compared to a supercharged which runs of your engine and thats about that so go TURBO cause I would.

i have a 99 tahoe but its just been pissing me off just replaced distributor cap and everything was fine. but now my check engine light is on but still running fine. it bothers me. i love my chevys but im begining to lose that love and thinking of selling it for a f150. should i?Should i sell my tahoe for a f150?
sometimes it is simple as your gas cap is not tight. Or just a dirty filter. The F150 had the problems of fire at the speed control module under the break booster. Most cases any one that has the codes can find out why. Sometimes you have to go to the dealer to get them to use the codes which cost a lot more then the corner mechanic. I have a Chevy Silverado after always owning a F150. But I sure like my Chevy.Should i sell my tahoe for a f150?
I had an 02 Chevy pick up that the check engine lite came on when it was new. I took it back to the dealer and they plugged it in and couldn't find anything. They cleared it and every now and then it came on but I said to hell with it and it never caused me any problems. Chevrolet engine & transmission mounts question?

This is mainly a question for mechanics who primarily work on Chevys, though I guess any mechanic can answer it that has experience.



I have 98 Chevrolet S10 4.3L V6 Vortec engine with automatic 4 speed transmission that recently failed inspection due to worn engine mounts. I was looking in my haynes manual and it said to put a block of wood on a jack and use that to raise the engine to change the mounts. However, a friend of mine, that primarily works on fords, says that that's a bad idea and I should use a engine hoist. Has anyone changed their mounts using just a jack? Did everything turn out fine? What are the dangers of not using an engine hoist to do the job? I really don't wanna fork over the $50-80 a day to rent an engine hoist.Chevrolet engine %26amp; transmission mounts question?

if you use a pece of wood that is wide enough to cover the entire base of the oil pan you will not have any trouble! I usually unpin one mount at a time to give more flexibility.The bad thing about a hoist is the legs for it are right in the way under the truck so unless you are a contortionist that is bad idea......The engine will only go so high ,so please remove the coolant fan and do one side at a time.....been doing it that was for years .good luckChevrolet engine %26amp; transmission mounts question?
it does not really matter what kind of truck you have use of the wood is to put on the jack so that the darn metal pad that is on the floor jack does not puncture the pan or create a ground for the truck . Before you start any thing take the neg battery cable lose from the truck an check for air breather clearances on fire wall and fan shroud. do only one side at a time and while you are under there if you have enough miles on the truck to need to replace the mounts do them all tranny also.

Well, we're owned a bunch of GM products over the years and only one Ford and we don't own the Ford anymore! My husband and I were both rural mail carriers, he was a regular and I was a sub. Needless to say, these vehicles got worked HARD! The Ford couldn't take it. Never had an engine failure, drive train problem, transmission problem with the GM vehicles. Can't say that about the Ford - 2 transmission problems in 32,000 mi.



Maintenance is the key regardless of what brand you buy! Just some vehicles appreciate it more! :)

Not all old cars are too expensive a kid cannot afford them, there is a 68 Fairlane around the corner from me for 1k, runs fine, needs paint, but for 1k thats a good deal.... I'm 21, I have been fixing up old cars since I got my first one when I was 11, I have owned around 35, including a 1950 A-40 Austin, 1962 Consul Capri, 1957 Plymouth, 1973 Mercury Comet, hell I even restored a 87 Chevette! Right now I'm driving a 1981 Mustang with a 300HP 302, I built the car from an abandon wreak to a very nice, fast car that turns heads. I love doing this but I'm now selling the Mustang and will probably never build another. Simple answer is money, the world is get more complicated by the day, harder to just survive and hopefully hold a job, put food on the table and maybe raise a nice little family, how the hell do you ever afford the time and money to work on old cars, I have spent every cent I ever made on them and don't regret it but also never made any of it back. Also between crime, gas prices, city driving, smog control, insurance, it's getting to be expensive and troublesome to drive a classic.........sorry I'm on your side........WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO GET THE YOUTH OF TODAY TO GET MORE INVOLVED INTO CLASSIC CARS? The main reason being that all of the GOOD classic cars are really unaffordable and you still have a ton of work to do to them to get them running. Look at the prices of the 1933-1934 ford cars. To find a rust bucket you are still going to spend $6,000-$10,000 and still have to completly restore it. I am 28 and love the older cars, but right now I drive a 99 Honda Civic with a motor swap thats completly built and turboed and I have under $20,000 in the whole car, INCLUDING the cost of the car it has dynoed at 497 HP at 25 pounds of boost and it is daily driven and gets 27 MPG. How much does a 1967 Mustang with 500 HP cost that you can drive everyday and is in mint condition? $50,000+ If I had the money I would be driving something along the lines of a 1969 Dodge Superbee with a 426 Hemi, but the whole money issue is a problem.

Well the 2010 Mustang Shelby GT500 has teh 5.4L supercharged V-8 pushing out 540HP and 510 lb-ft of torque. I am guessing that this is the most powerful Ford engine in a production vehicle.



A very few Ford Galaxies (not sure all years but I know it was very limited offered in 1965) featured the Cammer 427 motor which had a whopping 657BHP!! This is probably the most powerful engine of all time but was very very rare and was quickly discontinued. That made the Galaxy rocket from 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds! if you could keep it in a straight line and keep traction to the wheels lol. But remember back then they measured HP differently than today and that figure would probably be lower, but I am guessing it would still be the most powerful.



I believe the most powerful Chevrolet motor is the new supercharged LS9 which you can find in the Corvette ZR1 and the Cadillac CTS-V.

If you are undecided about placement have your tattoo artist guide you. If you go into the shop with a design in mind but no idea where you want it, an experienced artist can help you figure out where it would best 'fit' your body.

Upper arm/shoulder area is a good place. My brother-in-law has a tattoo there and works at a semi-formal office. Just about any shirt will cover that area on a man, unless you plan to go around work in a wife beater, and it's a classic spot for a tattoo. Another suggestion is your upper back or upper chest (over your heart, perhaps?), if you want something even more private.

Jaques, you poor misguided soul, the LS motors are one of the most reliable, fuel efficient V8 engines made....stop making stuff up.



Anyway, with that said, a well-equipped '11 GT 5.0 will be faster than the SS....because the SS is a heavy pig(way to go GM, idiots). However this version of the 5.0 hasn't been out long enough to see how reliable it is.

I'm not an American car kinda guy, but if I had to choose an American 4WD truck, I would actually pick Ford. Dodge is way too cheap, and Chevy is over rated. In my opinion though, I would go for a newer Toyota Tundra... 381 hp stock. Pretty awesome truck. mitsubushi montero have a good reall time 4x4 kick *** , i am always a gm guy and work a mechanic for 14 years but also jeep are pretty goods at handling like the wrangler etc , but i;'ll asume u buy new one save the headache , espacialy on the wrangler 4x4 . and i do talk **** about gm they are light i the back to have a 4x4 but i still love them , well stay away from ford , licoln or mercury . and to me the cheapest car is a mitsubushi iam talking engines problems but trans are great and they have some reall 4x4 balls there , i was amaze when i drove one in the winter storm we had ,and jeep grand cherokee are goods in snow but to me they are just compact suv .Who makes the better 4x4?
i am of the opinion that a jeep cherokee is hard to beat(with the 4.0). their drive trains and engines are bulletproof. they are known for occasionally having electrical issues though.

Sounds like you got a good deal on a pretty good car. According to Kelley Blue Book an 04 Impala w/ 115,000 in excellent condition would retail for $8,265. So, assuming your car is in good shape, you got yours for a pretty good price.



Chevies are very dependable and the Impala gets good ratings, particularly if it has the 3.8 litre engine. Next time, though, do your research before you buy the car.

Are you happy with the car? That is the main thing!



Nowadays 115K is not an excessive amount of miles and you can expect to get another 75K-150K miles on it provided you do your part in keeping up maintenance, etc.



Personally, you already got the car so no sense in beating yourself up if you think you could have gotten it or something else cheaper. Then again, maybe a cheaper car would have left you stranded at some point and cost more than the difference in towing and repair. You just never know so don't worry about it.

personally i consider 80's to be one of the worst decades for any vehicle.



emissions had become a big concern. but things like computers and fuel injection had not come out to battle emissions while still allowing power to be made.



early 70s or older and emissions werent a concern. 90s and newer they had computers and fuel injection to overcome the power lost elsewhere.



trucks do have somewhat of an exception. smog is broken into levels based on Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings.

get a heavy enough truck and smog expectactions drop.

i had a 78 chevy c30 camper special with a 454 in it. with its 9,000 lb GVWR it was over the 8,501 mark and emissions equipment was nothing but an A.I.R. system.

thats just one extra belt running one little air pump to put some extra oxygen into the exhuast pipes. and since the diverter valve had failed and did not divert when throttle was released it gave me that sweet popping sound when i let off the throttle.



chevy is indeed an excellent choice. especially for trucks. they are the proven most reliable trucks on the road.

i bought my '78 with 130k on it, put 40 more, sold it to a buddy. it has 280k and is still going strong. i frankly wish i had never sold it....

but my '00 chevy truck has been just as reliable and gets twice the miles per gallon and doesnt need supreme gas either.....Explanation of everything about trucks?

By a Dodge truck if you really want to experience a transmission that sucks. The GM Allison transmission is better suited to a 397 HP diesel with 765lb ft of torque. I'm quite sure you've never owned or driven one.

In the 4x4 department, I'd have to say the Chevy Colorado is a pretty solid choice - shift on the fly and good power to weight. I have an older Tacoma, and the frame rust issue has soured me to the Toyota truck - everything on the truck is rusty - and I've seen similarly used pickup trucks from the 80's with less! The 4wd on the Taco was a bit squirrely, too. I've driven the Dodge (V8), and its a solid built truck, but the mpg's were dismal (okay, it was a V8, but armored tanks get better mileage!).Who makes the better 4x4?

Whats a good fast car under 6k?

im looking to buy my first car and want something thats fast and drives well. I will probably do some basic modds to it like headers, intake, exhaust. Ive been looking at late 1996-1999s bmw 3 seris, 2000-2004 eclipse gts, 1999-2004 mustangs, it must be under 6k and automatic. NO civics, chylers, toyotas, chevys,. Well, being for your first car you really shouldn't get anything too fast... But as for the answer to your question... Mustangs are the fastest "cheap" cars you'll get. They are not exactly reliable though.



Honda Preludes are fast if you get a 97+, or you could get an earlier SI or Vtec edition. They are also FWD so they are easier to control (again, in my opinion) as a new driver along with their reliability. BMW's are always fast, but expensive upkeep. Eclipses are decent I guess, but aren't that reliable either and often aren't that fast without an engine swap. Judging from the year ranges you have, you're looking for a car that looks cool... That is only what Chevy people say. I'm an import fan but if I were to buy a domestic car, it would be a Ford. Historically, Chevy's are easier to work on and the parts were cheaper because there are more companies making parts for them. Ford also has a large availability of parts but the tend to cost more. In Ford's favor, you generally have to do less in repairs because Fords are usually more reliable.

The reason there are more parts available for Chevrolet's is because they move faster off the shelves. Ford used to magnaflux all rods that went into an engine. In the Chevy world that is called a "Performance" part (which means that performance is standard in a Ford, optional in a Bow Tie)

As for faster, HA. Try taking a Ford 4 door with a that V8. An 89 SHO would leave you in the dust.

Fords are designed for safety first. They also understate the horse power of the engine. Chevrolet has traditionally over stated horse power. Which would you Rather get- more then you were told you were getting (Ford) or less (GM).

Fords have more inspections done on car parts and such.

While there have been some great models in the Chevy line, few could buy them. While anyone could walk in and get a V8 mustang, not every one could get a V8 Camero in its final year.

G.M. didn,t have a small car, its cheaper to buy into a company thats already producing a small car than it is to tool-up and build one from scratch. Its all about economics.

93 Lincoln Mark VIII Starter Problem?

I have a 93 Mark VIII (prone to every electric problem possible I found out after purchasing.) Anyway, the car about a week ago died on me. It rained really heavy here in Texas (going on day 23 of rain.) But during the rain my car alarm went off while I was driving? How can that happen? And how can I solve this problem without pulling the fuse (No interior lights.) Also, after pulling the fuse shortly after my car won't start. I tried putting the fuse back in, but no luck. Could the rain possibly have something to do with the solenoid? I replaced my terminals already. And if it is the starter, where is the starter located on this model? Well, first things first, when you say it won't start, does the engine turn but doesn't start, or it won't crank all together. A lot of cars after inhaling some amount of water in various areas will crank but won't start. #2 the alarm is a big give away because a lot of alarms have a theft deterrent that is built into a starter kill. Seeing as you already saw an issue with the alarm while rolling, maybe it was going to be an issue once the car was parked and wet. Make sure the alarm's fuse isn't blown and it disarms properly.93 Lincoln Mark VIII Starter Problem?
Some alarms will disable the starter when they go off, and that's probably the problem. You didn't mention if the alarm is from the factory or is aftermarket. I've seen many cars with electrical problems caused by poorly installed aftermarket alarms.



If the alarm is aftermarket, you should be able to find where they spliced a relay into the wire that goes down to the starter



If you have a 4.6 liter engine the starter should be on the passenger side of the car.

Formula1 has no oval races and only races 15 or 16 times a year. NASCAR's schedule is much more demanding with 36 races a season.

Racing is a great sport and it doesn't matter if it's on an oval in a stock car, or on a road course in a high-tech, open wheel hot rod. I was raised on a '69 Camaro Super Sport 396 that my parents bought brand new. I have owned, Drag raced, Shown and driven my old Chevy since the 80's. I think my fuel pump may be going out in my 1999 tahoe?

i was coming to a stop when my truck stalled like it ran out of gas. i tried to start it again but it kept turning nuthin. i did notice that sound that chevys make when the truck runs or when you turn the key was not there anymore. i also checked the relay and that is good. so im out of ideas. some ideas or solutions would be goodI think my fuel pump may be going out in my 1999 tahoe?
You need to do or have someone perform a fuel pressure test. There is a test valve on the feed line up by your fuel injector rail or throttle body, depending on what you have. If fuel pressure is good, approx 50 pounds of pressure, then check for ignition problems after that.I think my fuel pump may be going out in my 1999 tahoe?
You need to isolate fuel problems from ignition problems. Start by spraying some quick start in the intake. If its a fuel problem it will momentarily run on the Quick Start.

I just purchasd a 2010 Honda accord coupe (i love it!) its a 2.4 DOHC I-VTEC engine. Is this a good engine? What makes it different from Chevys ECOTEC engine? I just traded it in for the accord. Its pretty quick for a four cylinder too!!

To sum it up, vtec in general is made to allow good fuel economy, smooth power band and while still have power throughout the rpms. I-vtec is Honda's answer to a smoother powerband, better fuel economy and low emissions. The I-vtec also incorperates a different set of cam lobes that effect the height at which the valves lift for a more accurate combustion depending on rpms

At a set RPM value (i.e., ~2500RPM in the D16Y5), the VTEC-E mechanism engages the 2nd intake valve, effectively resuming operation as a normal 16-valve engine. Note: in a VTEC-E engine, there are no high-RPM performance cam profiles; this engine is supposed to be tuned for fuel economy, right?



VTC - Variable Timing Control. This is a mechanism attached to the end of the intake camshaft only which acts as a continuously variable cam gear - it automatically adjusts the overlap between the intake and exhaust cams, effectively allowing the engine to have the most ideal amount of valve overlap in all RPM ranges. VTC is active at all RPMs.



i-VTEC - intelligent Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control. This is a combination of both the VTEC and the VTC technologies - in other words, i-VTEC = VTEC + VTC. Currently, the only engines that use the i-VTEC system are the DOHC K-series engines.



Now this is where things get tricky - Honda uses the term "DOHC i-VTEC" for two different systems: The first system is used in the K20A2 engine of the RSX Type-S. The second system is used in the K20A3 engine of the Civic Si.



The First System (K20A2):



This system is pretty close to the older DOHC VTEC engines. At low RPM, the K20A2 uses a normal cam profile to retain a smooth idle, good fuel economy, and good low-end power delivery. At 5800RPM, its VTEC mechanism engages a high-lift, long-duration "race" cam profile to increase high-end power delivery. The only difference between this i-VTEC engine and the older VTEC engines is the addition of the VTC system. The intake camshaft has the automatic self-adjusting cam gear which continuously optimizes valve overlap for all RPM ranges.



Here we see an image of the intake cam lobes of the K20A2. Notice there are 3 lobes; the two side lobes are the low-RPM profiles, and the center lobe is the high-lift, long-duration profile which engages at 5800RPM. Basically the same setup as the old VTEC engines we are familiar with.



Now here we see the VTC mechanism - the gear on the end of the intake cam that adjusts valve timing (overlap) automatically on the fly.



This system is used in engines powering the JDM Honda Integra Type-R, Civic Type-R, Accord Euro-R, and the USDM Acura RSX Type-S and TSX.



The Second System (K20A3):



This system does not really conform to the "DOHC i-VTEC" nomenclature, as Honda would like us to believe. As I mentioned in my previous post, it actually should be called "i-VTEC-E," because it uses a VTEC-E mechanism rather than a standard VTEC mechanism. At low RPM, the VTEC-E system effectively forces the engine to operate as a 12-valve engine - one of the intake valves does not open fully, thus decreasing fuel consumption. At 2200RPM, the VTEC-E system engages the 2nd intake valve, effectively resuming operation as a normal 16-valve engine. There are no high-RPM performance cam profiles; this engine is tuned to balance fuel economy and power, rather than provide pure performance. On the intake cam, there is the VTC mechanism which basically is an automatic self-adjusting cam gear used to continuously optimize the valve overlap for all RPM ranges. This being a VTEC-E system - and not a true DOHC VTEC system - is the reason the K20A3 redlines at a measly 6800RPM, while the K20ACan you tell me about my I-VTEC Engine?
Well im not to big on chevys but i can tell you about the honda vtec.i dont want to write an essay but the vtec is a not always on,when you hit 6000 rpms thats when it kicks in and the pistons start firing about twice as fast in the car. when you hit 6000 rpms you will certainly know when that vtec kicks in,youll think that you just swapped for a lambo(well not quite but you can pretend)Can you tell me about my I-VTEC Engine?
Well yeah, its a vtec, of course its quick for a 4 cyl. Don't know the difference between chevy's double overhead camshaft and honda overhead camshaft, But I do know that that car will last you a very long time. Just take good care of it. And enjoy!!

its just qualifying. it seems like dodge can run a few fast laps, but then in 'traffic' they tend to fall back. i wish they didnt since im a dodge fan!!

Reliability of Chevy V8 Vortec E85 Engines?

Shopping for a full size SUV (used). One of the local dealers has a number of such Chevys with V8 5.3L vortec E85 engines, in our price range. However, very few other dealers have such vehicles.



A search on the dealer turns up a review site with the majority of reviews labeling the dealer as a stereotypical shady used car dealer (hiding defects, playing dishonest games with customers etc).



The fact only this "turkey" dealer has the E85 engines leads me to believe those engines have problems. The models in question are 2003 models with 95,000 to 130,000 miles.



Another site indicated flex fuel engines are new and therefore have the inevitable developmental problems.

First you want to verify if it is really E85 ready or not. Get the VIN number on the Chevy you want to buy. Look at the 8th digit in the VIN. For Chevy trucks, if Prior to Model Year 2007 is a Z, then it is E85 Flex Fuel ready. If the 8th digit is other than a Z, then it is gas only. There is no physical difference between the Flex Fuel Chevy and the non-Flex Fuel model. The only difference is the software on the computer. Flex Fuel models have software that gives it the ability to put the proper amount of ethanol in the engine. All vehicles since 1985 can handle ethanol no problem but would require a conversion kit like the ones at http://www.change2E85.com . Flex Fuel engines are not new. I put 135k on my 5.3 liter with no problems yet, and still get 17.5 to 17.8 MPG.



You can always call Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 with your VIN # and ask about any recalls or updates available for that particular vehicle. I'd do that before I'd buy any used vehicle. Also ask for a carfax report, if they are the least bit hesitant, walk away.

The old and outdated S%26amp;S Super "E" is a good old school choice in carbs, jetted with a 26.5 or 28 pilot jet and a 66 or 68 main.

My personal choice for a carb is to convert it to a newer HD "CV" carb, requires S%26amp;S manifold, rubber spigot adapter, CV-Style air cleaner, (this can be a pain sometimes but IS REQUIRED)- - - fabricated air cleaner-to-head (or case center-bolt) support to keep carb from coming loose and falling off, and daul CV throttle cables....with this set-up, you get GREAT performance!!!!....in the carb, use a dynojet EVO Sportster kit with a 45 pilot jet. DEFINITELY use a K%26amp;N filter!!!



DO NOT USE DRAG PIPES!!!!!.....they will kill whatever performance gains you make from any other mods!!!......DRAG pipes are for DRAG racing.....WIDE OPEN THROTTLE USE ONLY is the only place they make power....you WILL lose 15-20% of all low %26amp; mid range hp %26amp; tq, and this is where you WANT and NEED the power.

Use any decent set of aftermarket muffled/baffled pipes....even better is the original factory crossover headers with (GREAT mufflers) - - stock mufflers with baffle ASSEMBLY cut out (leaves straight through glasspack)...or...use a good set of aftermarket slipons.



If the crank needs rebuilt, talk to a local reputable shop, it may be more cost effective to replace the entire crank assembly.



If the trans needs ANY work....let a local reputable shop do this!!!!.....a 4spd Sportster trans is NOT for the novice!!!....they require CRITICAL set-up, clearances and end-plays, if ANY of these are set EXACT, you can and most likely will burn it up; bend, burn or break shift forks.



Use Barnett KEVLAR clutches and NEW SPRINGS and preferrably pressure plate.

There's a lot to know about the mighty quad cam and I strongly suggest getting professional help on this.

I'm sure this is still an AMF year, as mine is an 81, I'll give you a brief in what I went through to get it to be the fire breathing import slayer it is today.

Wiscoe co 10.5-1 pistons, Andrews cams, EXTENSIVE head work, S%26amp;S Shorty E carburetor and a Barnett kevlar clutch.

Now back to the AMF thing. I too have built my share of 350 and 250 Bow Ties, well when putting the lower end together, I highly questioned the factory way of doing it, but was assured that it was fine. Got it going and enjoyed 3495 miles before something happened. Checked all kinds of stuff denying the obvious and worst thing. With the engine off (couldn't turn it on) I put it in gear and pushed it fine.

My flywheel had come apart from my output shaft. No key you see.

Took it to somebody who knows better and got it machined as well as a bunch of other little things I didn't realize.
