Pontiacs had quit Nascar, so there was no option to run Pontiacs. Remember Tony stewart started in a Pontiac, then Pontiac guit Nascar.

He ran the #45 Spree Chevrolet in 1999 the contract was with GM--Not For a specific Model they could have used a Pontiac or Both!!!!!!
Never really understood that one myself. But I assume it was a way to get extra support from GM. That and they probably saw how the Chevy averaged against the Pontiac and went with the car that seemed more consistant for that series.
The only thing that really seperated Pontiac and the Chevy were the sheet metal's aero package. And the engines were slightly different.
