I want to buy a fifth generation el camino I'm only looking at three years 78-80 and after that people tell me they started putting computers in cars....can someone explain exactly what the early computers did and should I stick to the years that don't have computers or say the hell with it and buy a 1983 el camino thanks guys I appreciate it!How did early gm computer command controls work in Chevys ?

78-79-80 didnt have computers. That started in 81. Even those were not that bad to work with. The GM system was actually pretty advanced and fairly easy to do diagnostics on especially with a scan tool which should be pretty easy to find on the used market these days. That vintage did have a few miles of vacuum lines and other crap on them that made em a pain but so did the computer ones so either way its a pain. One advantage to the 81+ is they would have lockup torque converters and maybe overdrive which means you could be getting 20mpg+ on the highway. With the plain 3 speed auto you will only be in the teens.
